Hey bike friends,

Here is a collection of great “gravel” rides around Virgil.

I have riden everything with 650bx47c slicks on a drop bar bike, but have now gone to knobby 48c’s.

You’ll ride on Haudenosaunee, Onundagaono, Gayogohó:nǫ˺, and Skaruhreh land. This land is covered by many broken treaties, first the Guswenta, or Two Row Wampum, or the Silver Covenant Chain of Friendship.

The belt has two purple rows running alongside each other representing two boats. One boat is the canoe with the Haudenosaunee way of life, laws, and people. The other is the Dutch ship with their laws, religion, and people in it. The boats will travel side by side down the river of life. Each nation will respect the ways of each other and will not interfere with the other. “Together we will travel in Friendship and in Peace Forever; as long as the grass is green, as long as the water runs downhill, as long as the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, and as long as our Mother Earth will last.”

These are all on public property, follow all posted signage and respond to conditions ahead of you. You are following these routes on your own personal responsibility. You’re riding your own equipment intentionally on dirt and forest access roads in and around Virgil, you are responsible for your well being and safety. Make sure you are self-sufficient.

The roads are open, the traffic will consist of cars, trucks, tractors, side-by-sides, atvs, dirt bikes, horse and riders, hikers, wildlife, other livestock, etc. You’ll pass confederates, anarchists, and everything in between. I’ve seen bobcats while biking and black bear while hiking. There will be paved sections linking up the best gravel/dirt roads in and around Virgil. Those roads will range from hero dirt, loose gravel, baby heads, to shale bedrock.

If you’re looking for a ride buddy and or some tips or local knowledge reach out.
